The winners of the EDGE Design Competition have been announced in Sydney, with awards presented to four young furniture designers on the opening day of the annual Australian International Furniture Fair.

Attracting submissions from over 50 emerging designers from Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Thailand, the awards covered four categories: Student, Commercial, Concept and Green.

Paphop Wongpanich took home the Commercial and Concept awards, presented, for his Star Table and 1974 Chair. Stuart Faulkner won in the Green category for his flat-pack Felix Stool which was designed around sustainable design principles. The Student category was won by TAFE Melbourne student, Rowan Turnham, and his Short Black Connection Coffee Table made from recycled Australian Blackwood.

This year’s competition was judged by Anita Stasionis from Space Furniture, Alexandra Graham from Green Home NSW, Wendy Moore from Home Beautiful Magazine and Marc Shamburg from Schamburg + Alvisse.

Uli Hassel, who curated the EDGE exhibition space at the Australian International Furniture Fair, said they had received a record number of designers and furniture pieces this year.

The winning entries will be on display at the fair until 5 February 2010.
